Shadbala Calculator
Shadbala, meaning 'six strengths,' is the comprehensive planetary strength calculation system in Vedic astrology. It evaluates each planet across six dimensions: Sthana Bala (positional), Dig Bala (directional), Kaala Bala (temporal), Cheshta Bala (motional), Naisargika Bala (natural), and Drig Bala (aspectual). The combined score tells you how effectively each planet can deliver its promised results. Kaala computes all six components for all planets using Swiss Ephemeris positional data and classical Parashari rules. Each component produces individual scores that sum into a total Shadbala value measured in Rupas. A planet is strong when its total exceeds the minimum threshold for that specific planet. This transforms chart reading from guesswork to quantitative analysis. Two people may both have Jupiter in the 10th house, but if one Jupiter has a Shadbala of 7 Rupas and the other has 3, the career outcomes will be dramatically different. Shadbala provides the objective measurement that distinguishes a planet that will deliver from one that will underperform.

The Six Strength Components
Sthana Bala (positional strength) measures strength from sign placement, including exaltation strength, strength across seven divisional charts, odd-even sign strength, angular house strength, and decanate strength. This is typically the largest component.
Dig Bala (directional strength) assigns strength based on which house the planet occupies. Jupiter and Mercury are strongest in the 1st house (East). Sun and Mars are strongest in the 10th (South). Saturn in the 7th (West). Moon and Venus in the 4th (North). Kaala Bala measures temporal strength from time of birth. Cheshta Bala evaluates whether the planet is direct, retrograde, or stationary. Naisargika Bala is a fixed value based on inherent luminosity. Drig Bala calculates net benefic or malefic aspects received.
Minimum Strength Requirements
Each planet has a different minimum threshold. Sun requires 390 Virupas (6.5 Rupas). Moon requires 360 (6.0). Mars requires 300 (5.0). Mercury requires 420 (7.0). Jupiter requires 390 (6.5). Venus requires 330 (5.5). Saturn requires 300 (5.0).
Planets exceeding their minimum are strong and can deliver good results during their Dasha periods. Planets falling significantly below are weak and may produce disappointing or delayed results. Kaala displays each planet's total against its required minimum, making it immediately clear which planets are your strongest allies and which need remedial attention.
Interpreting Your Shadbala Results
Kaala shows each planet's total strength, individual component scores, and a rating (strong, adequate, or weak). The breakdown reveals why a planet is strong or weak.
For example, a planet might have excellent Sthana Bala (good sign placement) but poor Dig Bala (wrong directional house) and weak Drig Bala (malefic affliction). This tells you the planet has inherent potential but faces obstacles in expressing it. Remedial measures can then target the specific weakness: gemstones and mantras address certain weaknesses, while behavioral adjustments address others.
Shadbala in Prediction and Remedy
For prediction, a planet with high Shadbala delivers its Dasha period's results more reliably and powerfully. During Jupiter Mahadasha, a strong-Shadbala Jupiter brings expansive growth, while a weak one may bring only modest improvement or even challenges.
For remedial work, Shadbala identifies which planets most need strengthening. If your 10th lord has the lowest score, career remedies targeting that planet become a priority. Jyothi incorporates Shadbala data into interpretations, ensuring predictions account for each planet's actual delivery capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Classical Shadbala applies to the seven visible planets. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets without physical bodies, so the six strength components (especially Cheshta Bala and Naisargika Bala) do not apply to them in the traditional framework. Their strength is assessed through other methods like sign placement and aspect analysis.
Yes, though it is uncommon. Shadbala is a composite score. A debilitated planet loses exaltation strength but can compensate through strong Dig Bala (right directional house), favorable Kaala Bala (right birth time), and positive Drig Bala (benefic aspects). It is possible, just unusual.
Shadbala quantifies whether the planets forming a Yoga can actually deliver. A Raj Yoga formed by two high-Shadbala planets manifests powerfully, while the same yoga with weak-Shadbala planets produces modest results. Kaala considers Shadbala when assessing Yoga strength.
