Divisional Charts Calculator

Divisional charts — called Varga charts or Amsa charts in Sanskrit — are secondary charts derived from the primary Rashi chart by dividing each zodiac sign into specific fractional parts. Each divisional chart magnifies a particular life domain, providing detailed insight that the Rashi chart alone cannot offer. The Navamsa (D9) reveals marriage and soul patterns, the Dashamsa (D10) details career and professional life, the Dwadashamsa (D12) shows ancestral inheritance, and so on through sixteen standard divisions. Kaala's Divisional Charts Calculator generates all sixteen Shodasavarga (standard Varga) charts from your birth data: D1 (Rashi), D2 (Hora), D3 (Drekkana), D4 (Chaturthamsa), D7 (Saptamsa), D9 (Navamsa), D10 (Dashamsa), D12 (Dwadashamsa), D16 (Shodashamsa), D20 (Vimshamsa), D24 (Chaturvimshamsa), D27 (Bhamsa), D30 (Trimshamsa), D40 (Khavedamsa), D45 (Aksha Vedamsa), and D60 (Shashtiamsa). Each chart is calculated with Swiss Ephemeris precision from your exact planetary positions. Divisional charts add layers of specificity that are impossible to achieve from the Rashi chart alone. Two people may both have Venus in the 7th house of Taurus in their Rashi chart, but their Venus placements in the Navamsa, Dashamsa, and other divisional charts will differ entirely, producing different marriage experiences, career paths, and life outcomes. The Varga charts explain why people with seemingly similar Rashi charts live very different lives.

The Key Divisional Charts

D1 (Rashi) is the primary chart showing actual planetary positions. D2 (Hora) divides each sign into two parts and indicates wealth and financial tendencies. D3 (Drekkana) divides each sign into three parts, revealing information about siblings, courage, and communication. D4 (Chaturthamsa) divides into four parts for property, real estate, and fixed assets. D7 (Saptamsa) divides into seven parts and reveals information about children and progeny.

D9 (Navamsa) is the second most important chart after D1, used for marriage, spouse characteristics, spiritual evolution, and confirming planetary strength. D10 (Dashamsa) reveals career details, professional reputation, and the nature of one's public contribution. D12 (Dwadashamsa) relates to parents and ancestral inheritance. D16 (Shodashamsa) governs vehicles, comforts, and happiness from material possessions. D20 (Vimshamsa) covers spiritual practices and religious inclinations.

How Divisional Charts Are Calculated

Each divisional chart is calculated by dividing each zodiac sign into a specific number of equal parts and assigning each part to a zodiac sign according to classical rules. For D9 (Navamsa), each 30-degree sign is divided into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. The starting sign for each element group differs: fire signs start from Aries, earth from Capricorn, air from Libra, and water from Cancer.

For D10 (Dashamsa), each sign is divided into ten parts of 3 degrees each. Odd signs start from the same sign, and even signs start from the 9th sign from themselves. These rules vary for each divisional chart and follow the formulas prescribed in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Kaala applies these classical rules with Swiss Ephemeris-grade precision in the underlying planetary positions, ensuring accurate divisional chart generation.

Vargottama and Cross-Chart Analysis

When a planet occupies the same sign in both the Rashi chart and a divisional chart, it gains special strength for that divisional chart's domain. A planet in the same sign in D1 and D9 is called Vargottama in Navamsa, gaining strength for marriage and soul-level expression. A planet in the same sign in D1 and D10 gains career strength.

The concept extends to Varga Visesha — planets appearing in their own sign or exaltation across multiple divisional charts accumulate strength that is measured through the Shodasavarga scheme. Parashara assigns specific point values: own sign in a Varga earns points, exaltation earns more. Planets scoring high across all sixteen Vargas (called Paramatamsa status) are extraordinarily powerful and produce exceptional results during their Dasha periods. Kaala computes this Varga strength score as part of the divisional charts analysis.

Practical Applications

The most commonly used divisional charts for practical predictions are D9 (marriage analysis), D10 (career analysis), and D7 (children and progeny). Before making a marriage prediction, a thorough Jyotishi examines the D9 chart's 7th house, Venus placement, and the D9 Lagna lord's condition. Before predicting career trajectory, the D10 chart's 10th house, Sun placement, and the strongest planets in D10 are assessed.

For questions about property and vehicles, D4 is examined. For spiritual development questions, D20 is consulted. For educational achievements, D24 is relevant. Kaala's AI interpreter Jyothi accesses divisional chart data when generating specialized predictions, ensuring that the interpretation goes beyond Rashi-level analysis for domains where divisional charts provide critical additional insight.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dashamsa (D10) chart is specifically designed for career and professional analysis. Examine the 10th house of D10, the placement of the Sun (natural career significator), and the D10 Lagna lord's position. Planets that are strong in both D1 and D10 are your primary career indicators. The Mahadasha and Antardasha of D10-strong planets bring the most significant career developments.

Divisional charts redistribute planets based on their exact degree within each sign, not just which sign they occupy. A planet at 5 degrees and one at 25 degrees of the same sign will typically appear in different signs in most divisional charts. This degree-level precision is what makes divisional charts valuable — they add specificity that the sign-level Rashi chart cannot provide.

For most purposes, D1 (Rashi), D9 (Navamsa), and one or two domain-specific charts (D10 for career, D7 for children, D4 for property) are sufficient. The higher divisional charts (D40, D45, D60) require extremely precise birth times and are used primarily by advanced practitioners for specialized analysis. Kaala generates all 16 for completeness but emphasizes D1 and D9 in standard interpretations.
