Ashtakavarga Calculator

Ashtakavarga is a unique Vedic astrology system that assigns numerical scores to each planet in each zodiac sign, creating a strength map that predicts how well transiting planets will perform as they move through different signs in your chart. The word means 'eight divisions' — each planet's score in a sign is determined by the benefic contributions of eight factors: the seven visible planets plus the Lagna. Kaala's Ashtakavarga Calculator computes the complete Bhinnashtakavarga (individual planet scores) and Sarvashtakavarga (combined house scores) for your birth chart. Each planet receives a score from 0 to 8 in each of the 12 signs, indicating how many of the eight contributing factors support that planet in that sign. A score of 5 or above is favorable, 4 is neutral, and 3 or below is challenging. The practical value of Ashtakavarga is enormous for transit prediction. When Jupiter transits a sign where it has an Ashtakavarga score of 6 in your chart, the transit produces strongly beneficial results. When Saturn transits a sign where it has a score of 2, expect pronounced challenges. This personalized scoring eliminates the one-size-fits-all problem of generic transit predictions and makes Kaala's transit analysis specific to your individual chart.

Bhinnashtakavarga: Individual Planet Scores

Bhinnashtakavarga calculates each planet's score in each zodiac sign individually. For each planet, Kaala checks whether each of the eight contributing factors (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Lagna) places a benefic point in that sign based on classical rules. The total of these benefic points (0 to 8) is the planet's Bhinnashtakavarga score for that sign.

The rules for benefic point assignment differ for each planet-contributor combination and are derived from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. For example, the Sun contributes a benefic point to signs 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 from its own position, but the rules differ for each planet-from-Sun combination. These classical rules are hard-coded in Kaala's calculation engine, producing authentic Parashari Ashtakavarga scores.

Sarvashtakavarga: Combined House Scores

Sarvashtakavarga sums all seven planets' Bhinnashtakavarga scores for each sign, producing a combined score ranging from 0 to 56 (theoretically). In practice, Sarvashtakavarga scores typically range from 18 to 38 per sign. The average is approximately 28 (337 total points divided by 12 signs).

Signs with Sarvashtakavarga scores above 28 are considered strong houses in your chart — planets transiting these signs produce generally favorable results regardless of which planet is transiting. Signs scoring below 25 are weaker areas where transits tend to produce more challenges. This house-level scoring is particularly useful for Saturn and Jupiter transits, which last long enough for the house score to meaningfully affect your experience over months or years.

Using Ashtakavarga for Transit Predictions

The primary application of Ashtakavarga is refining transit predictions. When Kaala calculates current transits, it overlays the transiting planet's Bhinnashtakavarga score in the sign being transited. Jupiter transiting a sign where it has 6 bindus (points) versus 2 bindus produces dramatically different life experiences — even though the house being transited is the same.

For Saturn transits, which dominate life experience for 2.5 years per sign, the Ashtakavarga score is especially significant. Saturn transiting a sign where it has 4+ bindus creates manageable discipline and productive responsibility. Saturn with 1-2 bindus in the transited sign brings pronounced challenges, delays, and pressure. This is why two people with the same Moon sign can have vastly different Sade Sati experiences — their Saturn Ashtakavarga scores in the relevant signs differ.

Ashtakavarga and Life Milestones

Advanced Ashtakavarga analysis uses a technique called Kaksha analysis to time events within a transit. Each 30-degree sign is divided into eight Kakshas (sectors of 3.75 degrees each), one ruled by each contributing factor. As a transiting planet passes through each Kaksha, the nature of the contributing factor's influence activates.

For major life milestones, Ashtakavarga provides a secondary confirmation layer. Marriage is more likely when Venus transits a sign with high Ashtakavarga bindus during a favorable Dasha period. Career advancement correlates with Sun or Saturn transiting high-scoring signs in the Sarvashtakavarga near the 10th house. Kaala integrates Ashtakavarga data into the overall transit analysis to provide the most nuanced predictions possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

For individual planets (Bhinnashtakavarga), a score of 5 or above in a sign is considered strong and favorable for transits through that sign. A score of 4 is neutral. Scores of 3 or below indicate challenging transit results. For combined house scores (Sarvashtakavarga), above 28 is favorable, 25-28 is neutral, and below 25 is relatively weak.

No. Ashtakavarga and Dasha are complementary systems serving different purposes. Dasha shows which planetary themes are active based on birth timing. Ashtakavarga shows how strong transiting planets will be as they move through specific signs. The most reliable predictions combine both — a favorable Dasha period coinciding with high-Ashtakavarga transits produces the strongest positive outcomes.

The classical Ashtakavarga system as described by Parashara applies to the seven visible planets only. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets that do not independently contribute or receive benefic points in the traditional framework. Some modern practitioners have attempted to extend Ashtakavarga to the nodes, but these extensions lack classical authority.
