Antardasha Calculator

The Antardasha (also called Bhukti) is the second level of the Vimshottari Dasha system. While your Mahadasha sets the overall life chapter, the Antardasha determines the specific plotline within it, changing every few months to a few years. Kaala computes all nine Antardashas within each Mahadasha with exact dates. Within a 20-year Venus Mahadasha, for instance, you pass through Venus-Venus, Venus-Sun, Venus-Moon, Venus-Mars, Venus-Rahu, Venus-Jupiter, Venus-Saturn, Venus-Mercury, and Venus-Ketu. Each one brings a distinct flavor to the Venus period. For practical prediction, the Mahadasha-Antardasha combination is the most commonly used timing tool in Jyotish. When someone predicts 'career advancement in 2027,' that is typically based on a favorable Antardasha activating within the current Mahadasha.

How Antardasha Duration Is Calculated

Each Mahadasha contains nine Antardashas in the standard Vimshottari sequence. Durations are proportional: multiply the Mahadasha durations of both the major and sub-period rulers, then divide by 120. For example, the Venus Antardasha within Jupiter Mahadasha lasts (20 x 16) / 120 = 2 years and 8 months.

The sequence starts with the Antardasha of the Mahadasha lord itself. So Venus Mahadasha runs: Venus-Venus, Venus-Sun, Venus-Moon, Venus-Mars, Venus-Rahu, Venus-Jupiter, Venus-Saturn, Venus-Mercury, Venus-Ketu. The first Antardasha always begins on the same date as the Mahadasha.

Interpreting Mahadasha-Antardasha Combinations

The two lords interact based on their natural relationship, their positions in your chart, and the houses they rule. When they are natural friends (like Jupiter-Moon or Venus-Mercury), the sub-period tends to flow smoothly. When they are natural enemies (like Sun-Saturn or Mars-Rahu), expect more friction.

House relationships matter equally. If your Mahadasha lord is in the 10th (career) and the Antardasha lord is in the 2nd (wealth), that sub-period may bring career-driven income growth. If the Mahadasha lord is in the 7th (partnerships) and the Antardasha lord is in the 12th (separation), the sub-period might bring distance in a relationship or foreign travel. Jyothi analyzes these specific combinations for personalized predictions.

Key Antardashas to Watch

Certain transitions carry more weight than others. The first Antardasha (of the Mahadasha lord itself) sets the tone for the entire major period. Whatever themes emerge here will recur throughout. The last Antardasha (of the next Mahadasha's ruler) serves as a preview of what is coming.

Rahu and Ketu Antardashas within any Mahadasha bring unexpected events and karmic intensity. Saturn Antardashas coincide with increased responsibility and patience demands. Jupiter Antardashas are generally the most supportive, bringing optimism and resolution. Venus Antardashas frequently bring relationship developments and creative output.

Using Antardasha for Event Timing

Professional Jyotishis use the Mahadasha-Antardasha combination as their primary timing framework. Marriage predictions require a favorable 7th lord or Venus Antardasha. Career promotions align with strong 10th lord or Sun Antardashas. Property purchase often coincides with 4th lord or Mars Antardashas.

To use this practically, identify the key Antardashas in your current Mahadasha, note their dates, and correlate them with the houses and significations of the Antardasha lord in your chart. If you are in Jupiter Mahadasha with Mercury Antardasha approaching, and Mercury rules your 10th house, that sub-period will likely bring career developments.

They are the same thing. Antardasha is the more common term in North Indian Jyotish tradition, while Bhukti is sometimes used in South Indian tradition. The calculation and interpretation are identical. Kaala uses both terms interchangeably.

The Antardasha of the 7th house lord, Venus (natural marriage significator), or Jupiter (significator of husband in a woman's chart) within a compatible Mahadasha creates the strongest marriage windows. The Mahadasha itself also needs to support marriage for the full indication.
