Best Time to Start Construction (Bhoomi Pujan)
Bhoomi Pujan (ground-breaking ceremony) marks the beginning of construction. In Vedic tradition, this is one of the most important Muhurta events because a building's foundation -- both physical and karmic -- is set at this moment. The quality of the Muhurta influences the construction process, the structural integrity, and the prosperity of everyone who will use the building. Mars is the karaka of land and engineering. The 4th house governs property. When Mars is strong and the Muhurta is well-chosen, construction proceeds smoothly. When the timing is off, expect delays, budget overruns, and structural issues.

Bhoomi Pujan Muhurta
The ideal Bhoomi Pujan window requires Shukla Paksha, a favorable Nakshatra (Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada -- the stable, foundation-building Nakshatras), an auspicious Tithi, and Mars or Jupiter Hora.
Thursday (Jupiter, blessings and growth) and Friday (Venus, comfort and beauty) are the best days. Monday works for residential construction. Avoid Saturday (Saturn delays construction) and Tuesday for formal commencement, despite Mars ruling construction.
The Sun should be strong -- avoid Bhoomi Pujan during the Sun's debilitation in Libra (October-November). Mars should not be retrograde at the time of commencement if possible.
Vastu and Muhurta Together
Bhoomi Pujan combines Jyotish (timing) with Vastu Shastra (spatial design). The puja is traditionally performed at the northeast corner of the plot, which is the Ishanya (divine) corner in Vastu. The first brick or foundation stone should be placed in the northeast.
Digging should begin in the northeast corner and proceed clockwise. The Muhurta determines when to start. Vastu determines where and how. Both systems work together for optimal results.
Construction Period Cautions
Avoid major construction work during Adhika Masa (intercalary month). Pause during solar and lunar eclipses. Some practitioners advise against pouring the main foundation during Chaturmas (the four-month period from July to October when many auspicious events are postponed).
If Mars goes retrograde during construction, expect delays but not necessarily problems. The construction pace slows but the quality can actually improve if the team uses the extra time for careful work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mars rules the domain of construction but Tuesday amplifies Mars energy to excess for a formal commencement. Too much Mars can bring accidents, rushed work, and structural aggression. Thursday or Friday provides a balanced energy for beginning. Mars Hora on those days gives you Mars support without Mars dominance.
Mars retrograde during construction typically causes delays -- materials arrive late, permits stall, workers are unavailable. If possible, complete the Bhoomi Pujan before Mars goes retrograde. If construction must continue during retrograde, expect a slower pace and plan accordingly.
For major renovations involving structural changes, a simplified Bhoomi Pujan before demolition or construction begins is recommended. For cosmetic updates (painting, fixtures), Muhurta timing is less critical.
Traditionally, the property owner's chart takes priority for Bhoomi Pujan. The Muhurta should be favorable for the owner's chart. The builder's chart is secondary but worth checking if the builder is a close partner in the project.
