Best Time for Mundan (Chudakarana) Ceremony
Mundan (Chudakarana) is the Vedic ceremony of the child's first head-shave, typically performed between the first and third year. This Samskara symbolizes purification, the removal of impurities from past lives, and the beginning of the child's fresh journey in this incarnation. The timing requires consideration of the child's age, the Moon's position, favorable Nakshatras, and avoidance of inauspicious periods. The Muhurta for Mundan is one of the most commonly requested Panchanga calculations in Indian families.

Age and Timing
Mundan is traditionally performed in the child's 1st, 3rd, or 5th year (odd years are preferred). Some regional traditions specify the 1st year, others the 3rd. The ceremony should ideally happen during the child's birth month or within the same Nakshatra cycle.
Shukla Paksha is required. Monday (Moon, connected to the head), Wednesday (Mercury, intelligence), Thursday (Jupiter, blessings), and Friday (Venus) are favorable. Avoid Tuesday and Saturday.
Nakshatra Selection
The Moon should be in a favorable Nakshatra during the ceremony. Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, and Revati are considered auspicious for Mundan. The child's birth Nakshatra is especially favorable -- performing Mundan when the Moon returns to the birth Nakshatra creates a strong cosmic alignment.
Avoid Mundan during the child's birth month's Krishna Paksha, during eclipses, and during Rahu Kalam.
Ceremony Elements
The ceremony begins with a prayer and lamp lighting. The barber (Nai) performs the shave, starting from the right side. The shaved hair is traditionally collected and disposed of in flowing water. The child is bathed and dressed in new clothes. Sweets are distributed.
Some families apply a sandalwood paste or turmeric-gram flour mixture to the shaved head. A visit to the family temple often follows the ceremony.
