How Planetary Aspects (Drishti) Work in Vedic Astrology
Planetary aspects in Vedic astrology are how planets influence houses and other planets that they are not physically sitting in. If you only look at where each planet is placed, you are seeing less than half the picture. Aspects are the invisible connections that link different parts of your chart together, creating the complex web of influences that shape your life. The Sanskrit word for aspect is Drishti, which literally means "sight" or "glance." When a planet aspects a house, it is casting its gaze upon that house and influencing its themes. Some planets have a gentle, benefic gaze (Jupiter's aspect is considered a blessing). Others have a harsh, pressuring gaze (Saturn's aspect brings discipline and delay). The quality of the aspect depends entirely on which planet is doing the looking. Vedic aspects work differently from Western aspects. In Western astrology, aspects are based on geometric angles between planets (conjunctions, squares, trines, oppositions). In Vedic astrology, aspects are house-based: every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, and three planets (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) have additional special aspects that give them extra reach across the chart.

The Universal 7th House Aspect
Every planet in Vedic astrology aspects the house directly opposite it, the 7th house from its position. This is the baseline rule. If Mars is in your 1st house, it automatically aspects your 7th house. If Venus is in your 5th house, it aspects your 11th house. If Saturn is in your 3rd house, it aspects your 9th house.
The 7th aspect is full strength for every planet. It means the planet's energy directly influences the house opposite it as if it were partially present there. Jupiter in the 1st house aspecting the 7th house brings its wisdom and expansive energy to your marriage and partnership sector. Saturn in the 4th house aspecting the 10th house brings discipline and structure to your career.
This is why experienced astrologers always check not just which planets are in a house but which planets are aspecting it. A house with no planets in it but aspected by Jupiter and Venus is still receiving significant benefic influence. A house occupied by a benefic planet but aspected by Saturn and Mars is dealing with mixed energies that complicate matters.
Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn: The Special Aspects
Three planets have additional aspects beyond the universal 7th house aspect, and these special aspects are unique to Vedic astrology.
Mars has special aspects on the 4th and 8th houses from its position, in addition to the 7th. If Mars is in your 1st house, it aspects the 4th house (home, mother, peace of mind), the 7th house (marriage, partnerships), and the 8th house (transformation, longevity, sudden events). Mars's aspects bring energy, drive, and sometimes aggression to these houses. A Mars aspect on the 4th house can create an energetic home environment or domestic conflicts, depending on Mars's condition.
Jupiter has special aspects on the 5th and 9th houses from its position, in addition to the 7th. If Jupiter is in your 1st house, it aspects the 5th (children, intelligence, creativity), the 7th (marriage), and the 9th (luck, higher learning, dharma). Jupiter's aspects are considered highly benefic. A Jupiter aspect on any house is like a protective blessing, expanding and elevating the themes of that house.
Saturn has special aspects on the 3rd and 10th houses from its position, in addition to the 7th. If Saturn is in your 1st house, it aspects the 3rd (courage, siblings, communication), the 7th (marriage), and the 10th (career, reputation). Saturn's aspects bring structure, discipline, delays, and eventual maturation to the houses it gazes upon.
Benefic vs. Malefic Aspects: How They Feel
The impact of an aspect depends on which planet is casting it. Jupiter's aspect on a house is almost universally considered beneficial. It protects, expands, and blesses the themes of that house. Jupiter aspecting the 2nd house supports wealth accumulation. Jupiter aspecting the 5th house enhances intelligence and blesses children. Jupiter aspecting the 7th house is excellent for marriage. Even Jupiter's aspect on difficult houses (6th, 8th, 12th) helps manage their challenging themes.
Saturn's aspect brings a different energy. It slows things down, demands patience, and adds a layer of responsibility to the aspected house. Saturn aspecting the 7th house does not prevent marriage but may delay it or bring a serious, older, or more mature partner. Saturn aspecting the 10th house can slow career progress but builds a durable, respected career over time.
Mars's aspect adds heat, energy, and sometimes conflict. Mars aspecting the 4th house can create a restless home life or a strong drive for property and security. Mars aspecting the 7th brings passion but also intensity to relationships. Mars aspecting the 10th gives ambition and competitive drive in career.
The nuance is that functional benefics and malefics differ by Ascendant. For Leo Ascendant, Mars rules the 4th and 9th houses and becomes a Yoga Karaka (best planet). Mars's aspects for Leo Ascendant are supportive and constructive, even though Mars is naturally malefic. Always check whether the aspecting planet is a functional benefic for your specific Ascendant.
Mutual Aspects and Conjunctions
When two planets aspect each other (each is in the other's aspect line), they form a mutual aspect. This creates a bidirectional influence where both planets modify each other's expression. A mutual aspect between Jupiter and Saturn, for example, creates a dynamic tension between expansion and restriction, optimism and realism, that plays out across both planets' house themes.
A conjunction is the strongest form of planetary interaction. When two or more planets share the same house, they are conjunct and blend their energies. A Sun-Mercury conjunction is common (they are never far apart astronomically) and produces sharp intellect combined with ego-driven communication. A Venus-Saturn conjunction can indicate delayed but lasting love, or beauty that comes with maturity.
The order of strength for planetary interactions, from strongest to weakest, is: conjunction (same house), mutual aspect (each aspecting the other), one-way aspect (one planet aspecting the other), and sign exchange (two planets in each other's signs). Conjunctions produce the most intense blending of energies. One-way aspects produce influence without the same intensity.
Using Aspects to Complete Your Chart Reading
Here is a practical approach to incorporating aspects into your chart analysis. For each house you want to understand, make two lists: which planets are placed in that house, and which planets are aspecting it. The combination of placed and aspecting planets gives you the complete influence picture.
For example, if you are analyzing your 7th house for marriage, check which planets sit in the 7th house, then check which planets aspect it. Remember: every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars additionally aspects from the 4th and 12th houses away, Jupiter from the 3rd and 11th houses away, and Saturn from the 5th and 10th houses away. Count from each planet's position to see if any of their aspect lines land on your 7th house.
A common pattern that produces excellent marriage results: no malefic planets in the 7th house, Jupiter aspecting the 7th, the 7th lord well-placed, and Venus strong in the chart. A challenging pattern: Saturn and Mars both aspecting the 7th house without Jupiter's protective gaze, creating both delay (Saturn) and conflict (Mars) in partnership matters.
Remember that aspects are constantly activated and deactivated by Dasha periods and transits. A challenging aspect from natal Saturn on your 10th house might only manifest strongly during Saturn's Dasha or when Saturn transits a sensitive point. During Jupiter's Dasha, Jupiter's protective aspects may dominate the chart experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
In classical Parashari astrology, Rahu and Ketu only have the standard 7th house aspect. Some traditions assign them the same special aspects as the planets they are associated with (Rahu like Saturn, Ketu like Mars), but this is not universally accepted. Kaala uses the classical Parashari approach.
An aspect cannot fully cancel a placement, but it can significantly modify it. A debilitated planet receiving Jupiter's aspect will perform much better than a debilitated planet without benefic aspects. Similarly, a strong planet receiving Saturn's aspect may face delays or obstacles that slow down its otherwise positive results.
No. Vedic aspects are house-based, not degree-based. Every planet fully aspects the 7th house regardless of the exact degree difference. Western astrology uses degree-based aspects (conjunction at 0 degrees, trine at 120 degrees, square at 90 degrees, etc.) with orbs of influence. The two systems analyze planetary relationships differently.
A conjunction is stronger. When planets share the same house, their energies blend more intensely than when one planet aspects another from across the chart. However, a mutual aspect (where two planets each aspect the other) approaches the intensity of a conjunction, especially if both planets are strong.
